“Hi, Heather. I’m new here.”
Seeking mental health support online is an effective and convenient way to access professional care from the comfort of your own space. Whether you’re new to therapy or transitioning from in-person sessions, you can find a few answers about what you can expect from my online mental health therapy practice here.
Getting started:
Before your first session, I will send you intake forms, which will allow you to provide some background information about yourself. This helps me understand your needs and create a personalized treatment plan. You’ll also receive instructions on how to access the virtual platform used for sessions.
Is it Private?
Online therapy follows the same confidentiality standards as in-person sessions. The platform that I use for the sessions and my notes complies with privacy laws, such as HIPAA, to ensure your personal information remains protected. You’ll want to find a quiet, private space for sessions to maintain confidentiality on your end as well.
How long are sessions?
Our sessions will last 45-53 minutes. The structure depends on your specific therapy approach, but you can expect open discussions about your thoughts, emotions, challenges, and goals.
Communication Method:
To connect with you, I use live video sessions. This is the most common format of Online Based Therapy, providing real-time face-to-face interaction.
Is Online Therapy effective?
Studies have shown that online therapy can be just as effective as in-person therapy for many mental health concerns, including but not limited to anxiety, depression, stress management, and relationship issues. However, it’s important to be open and engaged in the process to get the most out of your sessions.
Do I have everything I need to participate in an online session?
To ensure smooth sessions, you’ll need:
A stable internet connection.
A private, quiet space.
A device with a camera and microphone (a computer may be easiest, but in a pinch, a tablet or even a cell phone can work).
You may prefer:
Headphones for better audio quality and privacy.
A notebook or other note taking device to help you remember some of the insights we learn together.
I’ve tried therapy before, and I didn’t like it. Will this be the same?
Not all therapists are the right fit for everyone, but everyone can benefit from therapy. There is no obligation to remain with any therapist, but if you are looking to prioritize your well being, the right therapist is out there for you. We will connect before our first session to make sure we are the right fit.
How do I pay?
I accept payment in the form of check, or credit card, in addition to a growing list of participating insurance providers. Click here for a current list of accepted insurance plans.
I don’t have insurance. Can I still see you?
Yes! Self pay (without insurance) is always accepted in the form of a check or credit card.
